A 50-minute boat ride from the main island of Okinawa transported us to Zamami Island, where time stood still, and nothing else mattered but the soft white sand beneath our feet and the clear blue sea unfurling on the shore.

Once ashore, we followed a well-trodden trail up towards the Takatsukiyama Observatory Deck, which promised an unobstructed view of Furuzamami Beach and the uninhabited islands beyond. The view was great, no doubt, but what stole our hearts was this box of pork tamago onigiri from Katsu Kitchen, which we devoured with gusto.

In summer, Furuzamami Beach would be lined with brightly coloured parasols to shelter sunkissed snorkellers. We were there during the off-season so we pretty much had the entire beach to ourselves – neat.
